Practical answer: Clear business follow-up dates at year-end
Summarise the last agreed position before mentioning closure arrangements. Give an honest date for the next review or reply, and distinguish that from a promised outcome. Use an approved business contact route for genuinely urgent matters. Do not suggest that an acknowledgement confirms a proposal or reserves capacity.
A vague promise to reconnect “next year” is easy to lose. A December 2022 follow-up message should leave both parties with a clear understanding of the question, the person responsible and the intended restart point.
Context for the period
The RBA’s November 2022 overview described high inflation, tight labour markets and an expected slowing in global growth. Read the contemporary RBA overview.
An illustrative example
For example, a potential partner is waiting for an internal view on whether a trial is relevant. The closing note confirms that the review will resume in January and identifies who will make contact. It does not imply approval. On return, the owner can locate the note and complete the stated action without reconstructing the entire conversation.
Three points to take into the conversation
- Summarise the position
- Set a restart date
- Assign follow-up responsibility
Before progressing the conversation, check that the purpose, current information, responsible contact and next review date are clear. For a corporate-information, supplier or partnership enquiry, contact EJN Services through its own enquiry route.
