A decision-first agenda for reopening conversations

Practical answer: A decision-first agenda for reopening conversations

Review the most recent correspondence before contacting the other party. State the current purpose and identify any revised requirements. Keep the meeting small enough for the relevant people to contribute. If the enquiry no longer fits current priorities, close it clearly instead of repeatedly deferring an unexplained next step.

January is a natural time to restart introductions, but an old agenda may no longer match the decision ahead. A January 2023 enquiry can save time by asking what needs to be resolved now and what information has changed.

Economic context

The RBA’s November 2022 overview described high inflation, tight labour markets and an expected slowing in global growth. Read the RBA overview.

An illustrative example

A hypothetical partnership conversation paused in December. The restart agenda asks whether there is still a shared problem worth exploring, what a limited trial would involve and who would assess it. Those questions are more useful than repeating a general company presentation. Record any decision to proceed, pause or conclude the discussion.

Three points to take into the conversation

  1. Review the previous position
  2. Name the present decision
  3. Confirm whether to continue

Before progressing the conversation, check that the purpose, current information, responsible contact and next review date are clear. For a corporate-information, supplier or partnership enquiry, contact EJN Services through its enquiry page.
