Quarter-end enquiry review: interest versus progress

Practical answer: Quarter-end enquiry review: interest versus progress

Use plain stages such as information requested, clarification pending and internal review. Define what moves an item forward. Separate a friendly introduction from a qualified commercial discussion. Do not convert activity counts into claimed results. A useful review makes unresolved questions and stalled handovers visible.

The number of conversations in a register does not show how many are moving towards a decision. A March 2023 quarter-end review can make progress clearer by identifying the next observable step for each business enquiry.

Economic context

The RBA’s February 2023 overview described improving global supply chains while inflation, particularly for services, remained high. Read the RBA overview.

An illustrative example

For example, three supplier introductions may all be marked “active”, but only one has a confirmed requirements brief. The review records the actual stage of each and sets proportionate next actions. If the recipient no longer needs a discussion, record that outcome. Fewer well-defined open items can be more useful than a large list with unclear status.

Three points to take into the conversation

  1. Define observable stages
  2. Identify the next evidence
  3. Close inactive items clearly

Before progressing the conversation, check that the purpose, current information, responsible contact and next review date are clear. For a corporate-information, supplier or partnership enquiry, contact EJN Services through its enquiry page.
