February 2024: Scoping a business enquiry when resources are limited
Retrospective archive for February 2024. Prepared on 6 October 2026; this is not an original article from that period.
An enquiry can remain worthwhile when time or capacity is constrained. For February 2024, the useful approach is to define the smallest question that needs an answer before the organisation considers a larger commitment.
Context for the period
The RBA’s February 2024 overview described moderating inflation and restrictive financial conditions affecting demand. Read the contemporary RBA overview.
A practical approach
State the desired outcome and the practical boundary of the initial discussion. Identify available information and unresolved dependencies. Ask the recipient whether the request is relevant before presenting a detailed programme of work. A limited brief helps both parties assess fit without implying that a wider engagement has been agreed.
An illustrative example
A hypothetical organisation is considering a supplier review but first needs to understand which product category is suitable. Its enquiry asks for a focused clarification, with a later proposal dependent on the answer. Record the conclusion and decide whether further work is justified. This keeps the first step proportionate to the decision.
Three points to take into the conversation
- Name the essential question
- Limit the first step
- Review before expanding
Before progressing the conversation, check that the purpose, current information, responsible contact and next review date are clear. For a corporate-information, supplier or partnership enquiry, contact EJN Services through its own enquiry route.
