Check business identity before starting a new relationship
A familiar logo or polished website does not establish who you are dealing with. Before a new business relationship progresses, make sure the identity in the conversation matches the entity in the proposed paperwork.
Start with the supplied identifier
ABN Lookup explains that an ABN or ACN search is usually more efficient than a name search. Names can produce several similar results, including historical records. Use the identifier the other party provides, then compare the returned details carefully.
This is an identity check, not a guarantee of quality, creditworthiness, licensing or suitability. Those questions require their own evidence.
Keep a small verification record
- Record the legal name and identifier supplied.
- Note the official source and the date checked.
- Compare the name with the quotation or agreement.
- Resolve unexplained differences before proceeding.
- Check any relevant licence through its own regulator.
Ask for clarification without making accusations
A trading name may differ from a legal name. A business may also have changed its details. Ask the contact to explain the relationship rather than assuming a mismatch proves misconduct.
For a practical workflow, keep “identity checked” separate from “commercially approved”. Someone can verify an entity while the scope, insurance, references or contract terms remain unresolved.
If a document identifies a different contracting party from the one discussed, stop and clarify it before signing. The goal is a consistent record of who will supply, who will pay and who has authority to agree.
